How to find your take-home percentage

Your take-home percentage is the share of your gross pay that actually reaches you. It is one number, it works in every country, and it makes any "hours of work" figure honest.

The formula

take-home % = net pay ÷ gross pay × 100

Gross pay is your pay before anything is taken out. Net pay is what lands in your account after income tax, social security, health insurance, pension, and any other deductions.

Read it off your payslip

  1. Find "gross pay" or "total earnings" on a recent, normal payslip. Skip months with a bonus or unpaid leave.
  2. Find "net pay" or "take-home pay".
  3. Divide net by gross and multiply by 100.

Example in pesos: gross ₱30,000, net ₱25,800 after tax and contributions. ₱25,800 ÷ ₱30,000 = 0.86, so your take-home is 86%.

Example in dollars: gross $4,000 a month, net $3,080. $3,080 ÷ $4,000 = 0.77, so your take-home is 77%.

Why a percentage instead of tax rules?

Tax rules change from country to country, and often from year to year. A single percentage taken from your own payslip already includes all of it, so it stays correct for you without anyone needing to know the rules.

Things that can throw it off

In the calculator: enter your gross pay as usual, then type your percentage in "Take-home %". The result card will show that it is using take-home pay.
